Five Backyards

Before making photos on a regular basis, I thought simple landscapes were just that: simple. It's quite difficult to balance various elements and decide which subject to leave out of the frame.

Update, 6:59 p.m.: I don't think a simple image is the same as a simplistic one, for the record.

Gabbing on the Phone

We're at the nursing home.

I notice my mom's hair -- curving, shining, lush -- and I find her attractive in that moment.

If I was a man, I'd be interested. If I wasn't so superficial, I'd be a better person.

Nursing-Home Artwork

While she was married, I never saw my grandmother do anything crafty, let alone talk about it. She was fierce, political and confrontational. My grandfather was the one who drew, wrote stories, sewed dresses, fixed things, and created and damaged along the way.

I wonder what she is thinking nowadays when she constructs these pieces -- I can't bring myself to ask as I'd expect a sarcastic answer from her tough facade.
